Storm sewer - the most important element of the site drainage system
The storm sewer system ensures efficient drainage of rainwater and solves the task of removing excess water from household plots. Moreover, such a device prevents foundation erosion, basement flooding, and soil waterlogging on the adjacent territory.
The storm sewer is classified into the following types based on the installation method:
- open type - water flows through an open channel system, gutters;
- closed type - rainwater is collected using roof gutters with pipes, captured by a linear drainage system and closed grates integrated into the design of squares, roads, sidewalks. Then the water enters the network of underground pipes through sand traps;
- combined type - a combination of open storm drains and closed drainage systems.
Storm sewer is a complex engineering system consisting of a series of complementary elements. It includes:
- storm drains, gutters, channels;
- rainwater collection wells;
- sand traps;
- collectors;
- sewer pipes;
- inspection wells.
Pipes for storm sewer drainage systems are made of various materials: asbestos-cement, ceramics, polyethylene. Corrugated flexible pipes made of polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride are considered the most modern as they can be laid in any conditions without requiring additional equipment.
Furthermore, it is worth noting some positive properties of storm drainage:
- long service life - stiffness ribs run through the entire pipe, ensuring a uniform impact of the soil over the entire surface of the pipeline;
- optimal technical characteristics - the material is resistant to deformations, corrosion, and temperature changes.
Storm sewers are designed as complex and well-thought-out systems because the speed of surface water drainage depends on the quality of its devices. This means that when developing a project, it is necessary to consider numerous factors, such as analyzing the balance of water consumption/drainage and taking into account the terrain relief.
