Drainage manholes
Drainage manholes, or as they are also called, sewer manholes, are used to protect access to inspection wells of various underground utilities. The designs of drainage manholes, as well as the materials they are made of, may vary depending on where the manhole is intended to be used, as well as the types of utilities that will be located underneath them.
To manufacture drainage manholes, materials such as cast iron, concrete, and various polymers are used, among which polymer-sand and polymer-composite manholes can be distinguished. Depending on the application location, drainage manholes are divided into several types.:
- Light, compact manholes. Mainly used in green areas and pedestrian sidewalks.
- Medium manholes can be used in parking lots, sidewalks, and roads with low traffic, such as in parks and squares.
- Heavy manholes are used on roads with heavy traffic.
- Heavy-duty main manholes are used on intercity highways with heavy cargo and public transport traffic.
- Extra heavy manholes are used in special facilities such as docks and airports.
The most common material for manufacturing drainage manholes is gray cast iron. Such manholes are characterized by high strength and durability. Perhaps the only drawback of them is the fact that they often become targets for theft. Various locking mechanisms installed on drainage manholes do not help to combat this.
Today, thanks to technological advancements, polymer manholes are replacing cast iron manholes. They are significantly cheaper than cast iron counterparts, while having practically the same operational qualities. In addition, due to the fact that the composite used in the production of such manholes is not subject to secondary processing, the percentage of theft is minimized. Such manholes can be used everywhere except on major highways and special facilities.
