Storm grates are a part of the drainage system that protects drains from getting clogged with debris and also serves to ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicular traffic.
Due to the cellular structure of the grates, moisture can easily penetrate the system, while any debris is trapped on the surface and does not cause blockages. In addition, storm grates protect the system from potential mechanical damage and prevent pedestrians from falling into drainage wells.
The material used to make storm grates is chosen based on the planned application area of the grates and the load they will have to withstand.
Cast iron storm grates are the most common. This material has high anti-corrosion properties and can withstand significant loads. Gray cast iron grates are relatively inexpensive. Therefore, the use of such grates is very wide-ranging – from pedestrian areas and lawns to industrial premises and highways. In facilities expecting high loads, such as docks or airports, grates made of special high-strength cast iron are used. Typically, cast iron storm grates are equipped with locks and other anti-vandal devices to prevent theft for resale at scrap metal recycling centers.
In addition to cast iron, grates made of various polymers are quite common. These grates are practically indistinguishable from cast iron in terms of physical and mechanical qualities, but polymer grates can come in different colors, serving a decorative function when installed in lawns and parks, for example.
Steel grates and galvanized metal grates are mainly used in the food industry. However, due to their low resistance to atmospheric conditions and the effects of aggressive environments, the service life of such grates is no more than five to seven years, as unlike polymer or cast iron grates, they are susceptible to corrosion and eventually lose their normal appearance and functional qualities.
