Iron grates
The most common type of drainage grates that protect drainage channels from foreign objects are cast iron grates. Among their main advantages are high strength and resistance to aggressive environmental influences combined with low cost.
Depending on the loads they withstand, cast iron grates are divided into several classes. Class A is considered the least resistant to loads and is used exclusively in pedestrian areas, on sidewalks, or lawns. Class B grates can be used in pedestrian areas as well as on roadways. They can also be used in parking lots, gas stations, industrial and warehouse premises. The strongest is considered Class C, which can withstand maximum loads and is used not only on roadways, but also in industrial facilities, including special ones such as docks and airports, where loads can reach their maximum.
Cast iron grates are made of gray cast iron by high-pressure casting. For grates of increased strength, special high-strength cast iron is used, which in its physical and mechanical qualities is close to carbon steel.Cast iron grates are designed to perform the following functions:
- Preventing clogging of drainage systems. Due to the cellular structure, moisture passes through the grate unhindered, while all debris is trapped on the surface.
- Protection against mechanical damage to drainage system channels.
- Preventing human injuries when entering the drainage system manhole.
Casted iron grates can come in various shapes and can serve a decorative function. Artistic cast iron grates can harmoniously combine with various forged elements and are often used by landscape designers.
The only drawback of cast iron grates is that they are often stolen for scrap metal recycling. To prevent theft, they are equipped with special locks or other locking mechanisms.
