During the rainy season and snow melting, the issue of draining water from road surfaces, buildings, and structures becomes especially relevant. To prevent flooding of roads, sidewalks, residential, and industrial areas, a linear drainage system is installed.

Linear drainage systems are an excellent alternative to other analogs. Surface drainage systems of this type have several features:

A linear drainage system is a network of recessed trays (water collection channels; gutters, also known as storm drains) and sand traps – containers that retain sand and small debris carried by the water flow.

The installation of a linear drainage system does not require extensive surface preparation; it is sufficient to create flat slopes on both sides towards the drainage line. As a result, the risk of soil subsidence decreases, the drainage length shortens, and the water collection area increases.

A quality linear drainage system includes the following structural elements:

• Concrete support;
• Drainage grate;
• End cap;
• Grate fastening;
• Sand trap;
• Water discharge tray;
• Connection to the stormwater sewer system.

Drainage trays and sand traps are covered with special grates that block large debris. Small debris, leaves, and sand passing through the grates and trapped in the sand trap are regularly removed, preventing the sewer system from clogging. The sand trap acts as a buffer between surface drainage and the storm sewer system. The installation does not require significant surface preparation; flat slopes on both sides towards the drainage line are sufficient. This reduces the likelihood of soil subsidence, shortens the drainage length, and increases the water collection area.

Linear drainage is a convenient solution to the problem of rain and wastewater for areas without intensive vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic. This type of surface drainage complies with the established load class A15-C250 and is suitable for the following applications:

• Individual construction in urban or rural areas or at a country house;
• Garage;

• Multi-story parking garage;
• Sports grounds;
• Pedestrian areas without heavy traffic.

What to consider when designing a surface drainage system.

To establish an effective surface drainage system, a hydraulic calculation must be conducted based on parameters such as the area of the drainage zone, the intensity of precipitation in the region, the runoff coefficient, and the duration of rainwater flow. Based on this hydraulic calculation, components are selected by width, depth, and other parameters that determine the ability of the drainage channel to handle a specific water volume over time.

When selecting trays and drainage grates, it is essential to consider their installation location and expected load. Depending on their load-bearing capacity, trays and grates are classified into categories A, B, C, D, E, F.
