Geotextile is a special type of textile material that is ideal for use as a separating layer in construction and road works, as well as for reinforcing slopes and embankments. It can be of synthetic or natural origin. Geotextile is made from polypropylene or polyester fibers. During its production, methods such as needle punching or hydroentanglement are used, making the fabric water-permeable. Calendering with thermal fixation is also used, which increases the strength of the material.
Geotextile includes two main subgroups: non-woven fabric and geotextile fabric. The first group is characterized by polymers being bonded through thermal or mechanical means. Geotextile fabric consists of polymers bonded by weaving (usually at right angles). Geotextile has high resistance to moisture and active chemical compounds, including acids and alkalis. It is not prone to rot, the influence of fungi, mold, insects, and rodents. It has high tensile, tear, and puncture strength, which enables it to effectively resist plant roots and shoots. It does not get wet, so when laid in wet weather, the rolls do not increase in weight.
The use of this material is vast and depends on the properties of the polymers. The material is used as a separating layer between gravel, sand, or other particles to prevent their mixing, as a filter layer in drainage systems, and for wrapping drainage pipes. It is also used as a root barrier layer and to protect waterproofing from mechanical damage. The most common application of geotextile today is soil division and filtration. These polymers do not allow water to pass through. Therefore, most of the rainwater and irrigation water will accumulate between the geotextile and the ground surface, which is ideal for arid regions.
The high strength of the material allows for its wide application in road and railway construction. It serves as an ideal separator between different layers, such as sand and gravel. Its use prevents the mixing of layers, significantly reducing the consumption of building materials and increasing the strength of the structure. It can also be used for laying paths with tiles.
Geotextile is successfully used in the construction of dams, embankments, and artificial reservoirs. The material's high reinforcing ability helps strengthen slopes, banks, and protect waterproof membranes laid at the bottom of ponds or reservoirs from mechanical damage.
An important quality of geotextile is its good restraining properties. In addition to its described applications in construction, the material can also be used in suburban areas to separate local depleted and imported enriched soils, preventing their mixing.
Geotextile rolls are also used for plant protection and covering greenhouses. In the latter case, a special material resistant to ultraviolet radiation is used.
